Interview

Q : How did you fall into tour leading?

A : It was a natural step after three years of backpacking. I always thought it would be an honour to be able to show the world to other people.

Q : What do you like most about tour leading?

A : Having the opportunity to contribute to people´s willingness to overcome limits by getting out of their comfort zones going to amazing places for their first time. It’s still a privilege to contemplate the smile of that child to whom you give a grapefruit in the desert of Bayuda or admire a sunset in the valley of Hunza with the Rakaposhi in the background.

Q : Where is your favourite part of the world?

A : Africa, without doubt. But get me to any desert and I will be as happy as a child.

Q : What has been your biggest travel highlight?

A : That’s a very difficult question after 27 years on the road. Probably backpacking alone when I was 18 – both scary and exciting, that feeling of extraordinary loneliness made me who I am, for better or worse.

Q : What’s the one thing you couldn’t travel without?

A : Pen and paper!

Q : Which famous person would you most like to travel with?

A : Woody Allen.

Q : Have you ever made a cultural faux pas?

A : Not that I can recall, but I may only be unaware due to other people’s indulgence!
